Sandal and Tigers cruise to big victories

Sandal ran in eight tries as they enjoyed a 58-22 romp at home to Cleckheaton.

The hosts scored 29 unanswered points in the first half, courtesy of wingers Dave Martin and Simon Frewin, flanker James Briscoe, a penalty and three conversions from fly-half Greg Wood and the first of a hat-trick by replacement Gareth Newman. The winger’s second after the break took it to 36-0.

Cleckheaton scored four tries of their own, with a second Briscoe effort and scores for Joe Bedford and Newman.

Morley shipped nine-tries in a 57-7 thumping at league leaders Sale who scored three tries in five minutes to lead 17-0 by half-time.

Winger Tom Clough snatched an interception try from his own 22 for the Maroons before it was back to one-way traffic.

Huddersfield YMCA are still without a win after a 38-10 defeat at Rossendale, who led 17-3 at the break.

Three further second-half tries from the opposition were only answered by a penalty try awarded to YMCA.

Full back Alex Graham led the scoring as Sheffield Tigers powered to a comprehensive six-try 47-15 victory over Westoe.

Joe Taylor, Lewis McKay, Liam Wallace and Adam Shaw all added to Graham’s double.

Beverley’s difficult start to the season continued with a 32-21 home defeat to Billingham after they led 21-17 at the interval.

The East Yorkshire side led thanks to tries by Phil Duboulay, Sam Atiola and Alex Smith with Duboulay converting twice.

Billingham’s scores came from wing Martin Hopley and Peter Evans with Evans adding both conversions and one penalty.

Beverley failed to add to their score as Billingham cruised to victory with further tries by Craig Shepherd and Chris Hyndman and a further penalty and conversion by Evans.
