Sandal take steps up to fourth in the table

SANDAL scored more than 50 points yet again with a 66-14 home win over Birkenhead Park.

The hosts’ superior pace was the match-winning ingredient and they scored 10 tries. James Ellar, Gareth Newman and Simon Frewin all broke clear inside 20 minutes to set up a 22-0 lead.

Ahead 25-7 at the break, there was soon a second try for wing-man Ellar. Rob Overton then took it to 37-7, before three more tries extended the lead to 54-7 before winger Frewin ran in his second of the match. Centre Mark Pease then wrapped-up the Sandal scoring in the final stages.

n BRADFORD and Bingley came up just short after a stirring fightback saw them go down 19-18 at home to Waterloo.

The Bees allowed the visitors to build a comfortable 16-point lead with 20 minutes to play and then suddenly came to life to claw their way back into contention.

A cagey first half saw the visitors 6-3 ahead at the break after two penalties from Liam Reeve and one for the bees’ Richard Scull.

But while Martyn Mitchell was sin-binned following an illegal challenge, Waterloo added 13 points in the first 15 minutes of the second half the one try coming from Andrew Trotter.

The Waterloo line held firm until a 67th-minute try for Guy Ford, before Brett Mitchell followed him over soon after Scull had added a second penalty.

But, with seven minutes remaining, the Bees couldn’t break through again.

n AFTER running in five tries, Harrogate surged to a comfortable 34-7 win over Penrith, taking them top of the table.

Flanker Martin Seyres opened the scoring with his first-ever Harrogate try. Kyle Dench and Pete Wackett also went over and a Joe Rowntree conversion made it 17-0 at the interval.

Penrith hit back through Ben Littleton with a converted try befcore a Rowntree penalty widened the gap.

Callum Irvine scored a fine individual try, converted by himself and although scrum-halfRowntree was replaced by Phil Wickham, an injury to Wackett saw him return to the field to score his side’s last try of the match.
