Second chance for Mosienko at Steelers

The 30-year-old Canadian centre is the latest piece in the jigsaw for Gerad Adams ahead of the 2014-15 campaign, but arrives in South Yorkshire with something of a point to prove after being sacked by former club Esbjerg after being found guilty of breaking the Danish League’s rules on betting on your own team.

He played out the remainder of the season with the Alaska Aces in North America’s East Coast Hockey League before being snapped up by Adams for his firsy taste of UK ice hockey.

“I made a tremendous mistake, I was naïve and didn’t realise at the time the magnitude of what I was involved in,” said Mosienko, who helped Alaska win the Kelly Cup in the ECHL.

“I am grateful to Gerad and the Steelers for giving me the chance to show what I am about and going someway to restoring my reputation.”

Mosienko arrives in Sheffield with a good pedigree, racking up more than 50 games under the AHL under his belt, as well as more than 320 appearances in the ECHL.

Adams said a frank discussion with Mosienko helped allay any concerns he had over signing him and was a firm believer in giving people a second chance.

“When Tyler became available I was interested because he is an outstanding talent,” said Adams. “But, at the same time, I was concerned because of the issues he had last season.

“I believe that people deserve a second chance in life and after extensive background checks and character references, I’m confident that Tyler’s mistake was a one off.

“He’s full of remorse and fully understands the gravity of what happened.”
