Shahzad drafted into England squad

YORKSHIRE'S Ajmal Shahzad has been drafted into England's one-day international squad as a replacement for his fellow Yorkshireman Ryan Sidebottom.

Sidebottom, who plays for Nottinghamshire, has a hamstring injury but will remain with the squad.

Twenty-four-year-old Shahzad was denied a place in a 13-man squad named last week, after his fellow Yorkshire all-rounder Tim Bresnan recovered more quickly than anticipated from a foot problem.

Shahzad had made an encouraging Test debut against Bangladesh, in place of Bresnan, at Old Trafford and seemed set for a place in the England Lions squad for a triangular series against India A and West Indies A.

Left-arm seamer Sidebottom's hamstring strain has changed all that, though.

He has been ruled out of Nottinghamshire's Friends Provident t20 match tonight, after suffering the grade one strain to his left hamstring against Worcestershire on Sunday.

The ICC World Twenty20 winner will remain with the England squad to receive ongoing rehabilitation and further assessment.

National selector Geoff Miller said: "It's a shame Ryan has picked up this injury, because he's been injury-free for some time now and bowling well.

"Thankfully it's a relatively minor injury, and we look forward to him making a full recovery soon.

"Ajmal Shahzad is a strong addition to the squad - and he'll no doubt be looking to build on his maiden ODI appearance for England in Bangladesh over the winter."

Shahzad will join the England squad tonight in time for preparations - starting at the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough tomorrow - for Saturday's one-day international against Scotland in Edinburgh.
