Sharleston victory sees Murray prevail

Huddersfield pro rider Tom Murray was crowned the Yorkshire Road Racing Champion after sprinting his way to victory in the event based on a circuit at Sharleston, West Yorkshire.

The Sigma Sport Racing Team rider out-gunned two breakaway rivals in a three-up sprint at the end of the 78-mile event, which took in 13 laps of a six-mile circuit.

Murray held off Doncaster duo Kevin Dawson, the Sportscover rider and former winner of the event himself, as well as Team Corley Cycles' Mark Wordsworth.

The three had been part of a seven-rider break which attacked around halfway through the event. As they entered thefinal lap Dawson attacked, taking Murray and WOrdsworth with him. In the dash for the line it was Dawson once again who hit the gas first, but Murray had enough in his tank to overhaul his rival and take victory.

Leeds-based Liam Holohan (Team Raleigh) was fourth, around 15 seconds back, while Doncaster's Jake Tanner (Sportscover) was fifth, judge edging out Keighley's Matt Robinson (All Terrain Cycles). Defending champion Tom Barras crossed the line eighth, around a minute-and-a-half back at the head of a chasing bunch.

In cyclo-cross, Craven Energy rider Ian Taylor drew first blood in the opening round of the Yorkshire Points Series at Oakbank School in Keighley on SUnday, beating former National Champion Chris Young (JD Cycles) into second spot by around 40 seconds.

And in time trialling, Hull rider Joel Wainman (Team Swift) won the Scarborough Paragon CC 10-mile event at Grinsdale, clocking 22:17 for the course to edge out Planet X rival Nigel Haigh by more than a minute, while Bridlington CC's Andy Askwith was third, a minute-and-a-half off the pace.
