Sheffield in control as Salem are sunk

Sheffield secured another bonus point win to put themselves clear at the top.

They beat Bradford Salem 35-6 after a strong defensive display allowed them to create some open and flowing rugby, and with second-placed North Ribblesdale only scoring two tries in their win over Castleford, Sheffield are a point clear.

Fly-half Donal Collins kicked an early penalty and then converted a try on six minutes from captain and No 8 Andy Kelly.

Salem pulled back a penalty through centre Jonny Robinson and he then traded penalties with Collins to make it 13-6 at the break.

After the break, it was all Sheffield, with flanker Tom Womack, prop Stuart Simonsen and second-row Tom White touching down and Collins converting all three.

Ribblesdale came out on top after a close encounter with Castleford. Centres Dan Watson and John Moimoi scored their tries, and Steve Moon kicked a conversion and penalty. Ian Mattison scored Castleford's try, and Paul Philpott converted and added a penalty.

York won 39-12 at Selby, running in six tries on their way to victory and climbing to fourth.

Selby were 12-0 ahead after 30 minutes with second-row Matt Wood and full-back Jamie Baxter scoring tries. York hit back to level 12-12 at the break, centre Nick Ventress and winger Charlie Nicholson scoring tries.

It was then all York, with No 8 John Sharp, full-back Alex Nixon, centre Sam Potrykus and replacement centre Gareth Singleton scoring tries, and Ventress added three conversions and a penalty.

Malton and Norton maintained their winning start with a resounding 48-16 victory, by seven tries to two, against Dinnington at the Gannock.

Winger Tom Gravell ran in a hat-trick of tries, two of them in the first half to help Malton into a 20-6 interval lead.

Centre Teei Piawi, prop Paul Dobson, winger Henry Newitt and centre Tony Maka were the other home scorers, with Piawi converting five and adding a penalty.

Props Sam Kirk and David Marshall scored tries for Dinnington after two first-half penalties from Danny Wilkinson.
