Sheffield's Rudman to carry flag as Vancouver Olympics begin

BRITISH medal hope Shelley Rudman has been chosen as the flag bearer for the Great Britain team at the opening ceremony of the XXI Winter Olympics in Vancouver tonight.

The 28-year-old was Britain's only medallist in Turin four years ago, when she won silver in the skeleton.

She goes for gold at the sliding centre in Whistler next Thursday and Friday, along with her fiance Kristan Bromley in the men's event.

Bromley designs a state-of-the-art sled for the duo to compete on at their workshop at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in South Yorkshire.

Rudman has also been named captain of the British team based in Whistler which is three hours north of Vancouver.

David Murdoch, skip of the men's curling team who are the reigning world champions, is the captain of the Vancouver-based team.

Sheffield resident Rudman said: "I am so excited to be selected to carry the flag for Team GB.

"It's a huge honour for me to have been chosen to represent our team, and ultimately our country, in this way.

"There are some wonderful athletes here, and I will be so proud to be the person who leads them into the stadium.

"I'm looking forward to the Opening Ceremony very much indeed.

"I'm sure it's going to be a fantastic occasion and, as athletes, it's a sign to us that the Games really are getting under way.

"It's an added privilege to be named as Team Captain for the Whistler athletes, and when I look at some of the talented competitors we have up in the mountains, it's very exciting."
