Sheppard hooks up with Jets

FORMER Sheffield Steelers' player-assistant coach Doug Sheppard has agreed terms with ambitious EPL outfit Slough Jets.

Sheppard was discarded by Steelers at the end of a disappointing 2009-10 campaign which produced a poor defence of their 2009 Elite League championship and play-off crowns.

But the 33-year-old former Basingstoke Bison was not likely to have been short of potential suitors having proved one of the most consistent performers in recent years.

There was plenty of speculation over Sheppard's next move, which was always going to be in the UK, with Elite League newcomers Braehead Clan and Dundee Stars possible destinations. But EPL play-off champions Slough -coached by Pete Russell - won the race for Sheppard's signature.

"After sitting down with Pete for 20 minutes, the decision to join Slough was an easy one," said Sheppard.

"I've talked to a lot of hockey people that know the EPL and I've been told great things about the Jets organisation and the fans.

"Hopefully we can add another championship to their playoff success."

Russell was delighted to have landed a player he considers one of the best around.

"He had a lot of interest from around the Elite League and EPL so as you can imagine this signing has given the whole organisation a major boost," said Russell.

Sheffield Scimitars, the team who Slough put out in the first round of last season's EPL play-offs, have announced their second major signing of the close season after defenceman Arran Strawson agreed to return for a second season.

Scimitars coach, Jon Rowbotham, said: "It was tremendous to witness his development as the season wore on. By the end of the campaign, he had turned into a competent defensive force."

Scimitars began their recruitment drive last week by announcing the re-signing of goaltender Ben Bowns.

Braehead Clan have moved quickly to replace player-coach Adam Calder by announcing Bruce Richardson as his replacement.

Calder left just over a month after his capture was announced by the Elite League's newest team and has been linked with a move to Sheffield Steelers.

Richardson, 32, has a reputation as one of the league's more aggressive players and hopes his style of hockey will be evident throughout his roster.

"I'll put a real hard-working team on the ice," said Richardson.

"There will be lots of skill, grit and entertainment for the fans who'll witness in your face hockey when we take to the ice.
