Shoot-out dramas see Steelers come up short

A goalless 65 minutes on home ice against defending champions Belfast Giants on Saturday night, saw the visitors take the second point on offer when Mike Kompon was the only one to find the back of the net in the ensuing shoot-out.

Fast forward 24 hours and Gerad Adams’s team found themselves in a similar situation, although they had rallied from 2-0 down after goals for hosts Dundee Stars from Igor Gongalsky at 1.22 and Kevin Quick at 21.59.

Jeff Legue halved the deficit just after the halfway mark, but it wasn’t until there were less than three minutes remaining that the visitors were able to draw level through Tyler Mosienko’s 20th of the season.

Again, the Steelers couldn’t find a way past the opposition netminder in the shoot-out, with Sean Ringrose’s successful effort past Steelers’ Frank Doyle proving enough for the extra point.

Hull Stingrays failed to build on the momentum of a Saturday night win for the second weekend running.

In the first of a double header against Fife Flyers, Omar Pacha’s team were deserved 6-3 winners in Kirkcaldy, racing into a 5-0 lead by the end of the second through Jordan Mayer, Jordan Knox, Pacha, Carl Lauzon and Zach Hervato.

Fife rallied to make it 5-3 with just under eight minutes remaining, but Will Frederick wrapped up the points at 56.16.

That result took them to within a point of sixth-placed Flyers, but they couldn’t repeat the result last night on home ice.

Two goals adrift after the first period, Fife gained revenge with a 3-2 win, despite third-period Hull strikes from Lauzon and Eric Galbraith.
