Waring had sunk five birdie putts in 12 holes to move to 12 under par when play was suspended, leaving him a shot ahead of Darren Fichardt and Dean Burmester with a third chasing South African Jacques Kruyswijk a shot further back.

Overnight leader Paul Peterson was two over par after 12 holes of his second round, leaving him five shots off the lead on seven under, while defending champion Haydn Porteous – having managed to complete his round –was among the group on nine under after equalling his first-round score of 67.

Woodsome Hall’s Chris Hanson played nine holes on the East Course and had dipped a further two shots below par following an opening 67 to sit inside the top 25 at six under.

He had three birdies and just one dropped shot, at the fourth.

Malton’s Simon Dyson followed his 71 with a fine 69, also on the East Course.

He grabbed an eagle at the second, but gave back one shot at the next. After birdies at nine and 10, he faltered with three consecutive bogeys from the 12th, but responded superbly with birdies at both 16 and 17.

Hull’s Richard Finch had begun with a 69, but a pair of second-round birdies on the West Course were overwhelmed by five bogeys and he signed for a 75.

Howley Hall’s Marcus Armitage, level par at the start of the day after a 71 on Thursday, played each of the holes on the front nine on the East Course in par to remain on that score.

Harrogate’s John Parry, one over with a 73 on day one, played nine holes of the West Course and dipped to four over.

Waring, who opened with a seven-under-par 65 in his first round, still has six holes to complete today along with 70 other players, heavy rain having badly affected day one.

Fichardt was first back in the clubhouse with 66 before Burmester, aided by four straight birdies from the eighth hole, joined his countryman on 11 under par.

Kruyswijk might have made it a three-way tie had three bogeys not blotted his second round of 70, following five birdies himself.
