Simpson making his switch pay off

Scarborough, last year's runners-up, have high hopes of going one better this time and Andy Simpson, their recruit from Hull, who finished sixth in the batting averages, showed his quality with the ball by taking

5-26 in 9.1 overs in a 44-run victory at Cleethorpes. James Finch and Simon Tennant carried their bats for 51 and 46, respectively.

Sheffield Collegiatebrought Driffield Town crashing back to earth. Driffield were the opening day's highest scorers with 290-3 at Sheffield United but their batsmen could muster just 76 runs against Collegiate, for whom Nick Gaywood plundered 129. Tom Hancock was Collegiate's most successful bowler with 3-23.

Appleby Frodingham were the day's top scorers, piling up 305-9 in a 98-run triumph against Sheffield United.

Jaco Scholtz, Duncan Heath and James Pickersgill helped themselves to half-centuries, Jamie Harrison making 55 for United, who had the game's top bowler in Luke Shutt, who took 4-27.

There were two centuries at Harrogate where Doncaster Town won by two wickets with five balls to spare. Vic Craven hit 12 fours and two sixes in accumulating 101 for Harrogate as he figured in a second-wicket stand of 121 with Alex Twigg (89). Alex Gosney was Doncaster's big hitter with an unbeaten 108 containing five fours and seven sixes.

Andrew Chadwick scored a second successive half-century for Castleford, who won by six wickets at Hull, John Randerson playing a captain's part by taking 4-29 in 13 overs.

Barnsley made 240-9 in their 55 overs before rain curtailed their match at Rotherham, Gary Ballance and Simon Widdup hitting half-centuries. Spinner Tom Knight took six wickets for Town. Yorkshire Academy reached 15-1 in 5.5 overs at champions York before rain washed out play.

There is a full programme of matches today with York hoping their game at Cleethorpes lasts longer than Saturday's curtailed home fixture.

Scarborough defend their 100 per cent record at Driffield, while Sheffield Collegiate entertain the Academy.
