SkyBet: Writing is on the wall and it spells doom for Wednesday

There are two huge games involving Yorkshire teams this weekend, both with an impact on who will be playing in the Championship next season.

Sheffield Wednesday's do-or-die clash with Crystal Palace will take most of the headlines, but Leeds United's trip to Charlton also has great significance.

Wednesday have a shot at safety thanks to Palace's breathless 1-1 draw with West Brom on Monday night, but it's no fluke that Alan Irvine's men find themselves in this perilous position.

A run of just two wins in 15 matches highlights their shortcomings and the fact that even a win would not take them to 50 points is a damning statistic. On points won, the Owls are one of the three worst teams in the division and Palace can reinforce that view tomorrow.

Paul Hart's team are only in danger because of their 10-point deduction for going into administration – prior to which they were dreaming of the Premier League via the play-offs, not League One and possible financial oblivion.

The worrying statistic for Wednesday fans is that Palace have lost just five away games all season and only two since the turn of the year – at Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.

They won 2-1 at Hillsborough in the FA Cup in January and despite their money troubles their squad has changed little from that day. The work ethic instilled by Neil Warnock remains and although they lack craft and imagination, the same is true of a Wednesday team which has scored only five goals in the last seven home games.

The Owls are 11-8 favourites for the win but I'm going with Palace to earn the point they need from a tense and thrilling draw.

Leeds could open the door for Millwall if they fail to win at the Valley, while Charlton also have an outside chance of taking the second automatic promotion place but must win this game.

There have been only seven goals in Charlton's last six games – three 1-0 wins and two 1-0 defeats included – so the 9-10 available for 'Under 2.5 Goals' immediately stands out.

Hull have their last chance to gain their first Premier League away win, but Wigan should prove too strong for them at the DW Stadium on Monday.

There have been 11 goals in Wigan's last two matches and with the pressure off there may well be more here – 10-11 is a good price for 'Over 2.5'.

In the Championship, Ipswich's hot prospect, Connor Wickham, looks a good bet to add to his three goals in four games against Sheffield United, while West Brom appear near certainties to defeat Barnsley at the Hawthorns and I expect the multiple betting to reflect that.

Doncaster's opponents Swansea need a win to have any chance of a play-off place – take Rovers at 11-2 to upset their out-of-form hosts.

Huddersfield know they will be in the play-offs and Rotherham are likely to be – both teams can prepare with home wins.

A third successive home win should cement Peter Taylor's place in the Bradford manager's office.
