Smith poised for Rhinos return after Wasps release

LEEDS RHINOS will step up their efforts to bring England centre Lee Smith back to rugby league following his release by London Wasps.

The 23-year-old switched codes at the end of last season, joining the Guinness Premiership club on a three-year deal, but made just two senior appearances as well as two outings in the A team.

"Unfortunately things have not worked out for me and I am returning home to be closer to my family," said the Leeds-born Smith.

"I have made some good friends at Wasps and I would like to wish the players and coaching staff all the best for the remainder of the season."

Smith, who linked up with Wasps in December after playing for England in the Four Nations series, has been released with immediate effect and is set to have talks with his old club about a return to Headingley.

Wasps director of rugby Tony Hanks said: "As a club we support Lee's desire to return home to his family and we thank him for his efforts with the club.

"Everyone at Wasps wishes him the very best in the next stage of his career."

Last week the Rhinos failed in an attempt to secure Smith's services on loan to help them through their injury crisis but club spokesman Phil Daley confirmed that chief executive Gary Hetherington aims to hold talks with the player later today.

"We will look to speak to him and see what his plans are," he said.
