Sports Letters: Bravery of Burrow brings back memories of scrum-half legends

From: Eddie Padgett, West Lane, Cononley, Skipton.I HAD to smile at the sheer courage of Rob Burrow taking on the giant Tongan forward Ephalahame Lauaki (Hull v Leeds, April 17).

Many times I have seen him singled out for special treatment by frustrated opposition players unable to contain his skills.

The latest of a long line of diminutive but extremely durable scrum-halves to wear the blue and amber, one nearest in style and stature in my memory would be the flame-haired Jackie Pycroft, who I remember arriving to matches on a massive black motorcycle and sidecar combination. How, I wondered would this little man be able to handle this great machine, let alone kickstart it, but handle it he did capably, as well as the big guys out on the pitch.

Jack had superseded the late great Jeff Stevenson in the No 7 jersey at Headingley. Another wonderful crowd pleaser.

Full flight in attack, all three would give the impression of feet not actually touching the turf, but in defence tackling and bringing down the hardest of opponents twice their size. Hearts like lions!

So thanks Rob – and thanks Leeds – keep 'em coming!.

I think the photograph taken by Gareth Copley (YP April 24, 2010) of Steve Davis leaving the Crucible after his splendid battle with John Higgins should be the sporting picture of the year.

Not simply for the old maestro himself but for the sea of smiling faces applauding his victory who form the background. They all show such genuine warmth and real pleasure, with their smiling faces along with the odd tear.

Why are the ECB set on destroying county cricket? If we are to challenge successfully at Test level, we need our top players to get a more four-day cricket. Instead batsmen like Pietersen moan how much they play, then head overseas to take part in the lucrative IPL.

It would be interesting to survey cricket supporters and find out what they want.

In answer to your poll (Yorkshire Post, April 29), regarding ground sharing at Valley Parade, Bradford with Bradford City I am totally against it.

I have supported Bradford Bulls (Northern) since 1964 and we are all still waiting for Bradford council to make improvements. Having said that there is no way I would come to Bradford from York and watch Bradford Bulls play at Valley Parade.
