Squires realises Steelers dream

SHEFFIELD STEELDOGS have begun their search for a new star forward after Tom Squires's decision to join city rivals the Steelers.

The 19-year-old, who has nine points – including five goals – from as many games this season, has impressed Steelers' player-coach Ben Simon in recent a number of recent training sessions he has attended with the Elite League side.

Steeldogs' coach Matt Darlow said while he was pleased for Squires being able to make the step up from the English Premier League, but added he was sad to see him go.

"He's served his time and he's got his move – we've always said we would never stand in the way of any player who wanted to move up to the Elite League - we wish him all the best," he said.

"We've got two players coming back this weekend in Nicky Lewis and Kristaps Pete which will help but we will be looking to try and replace Tom as quickly as possible."

Sheffield-born Squires added: "When Ben asked me to sign it wasn't an opportunity I could turn down.

"Playing for the Steelers is something I have been trying to achieve for a while now so I am excited to be given the chance to prove what I can bring to the club."

Steelers tried to give Squires his first try-out in the top-flight last Wednesday when they found themselves short on numbers for the Challenge Cup clash against Yorkshire rivals Hull Stingrays.

But Darlow was forced to decline their request as he had too many injuries of his own to deal with and didn't want to risk losing another player ahead of the weekend's EPL games.

Squires's move means he will initially help provide cover for Steelers' injured captain Jonathan Phillips, who is awaiting the outcome of a meeting with a specialist surgeon this week after suffering a knee ligament injury in last Saturday's 4-0 defeat at home to the Braehead Clan.

Phillips is expected to be out until at least Christmas, giving Squires an opportunity to prove himself, with Simon hoping the youngster can fully realise his potential.

"The Academy and the Steeldogs have done a tremendous job in developing Tom and he will continue to become a better player with the Steelers, with his final potential up to him," said Simon.

"I am excited that a local kid has worked so hard and been developed in a great system here in Sheffield."
