Steeldogs hit back to stun Wildcats

SHEFFIELD Steeldogs got their English Premier League campaign off to a perfect start when they came from behind to seal a thrilling overtime triumph at Swindon Wildcats.

Ben Morgan proved to be the opening-hero for Andre Payette’s team, slotting home the puck with 40 seconds remaining of the additional period.

It marked a remarkable turnaround for the visitors, who found themselves down at the end of the first following two strikes from former Bracknell Bees forward Nicky Watt.

The fightback began early in the second when the much-admired Janis Olozins grabbed his first of the season at 21.03 but it was some time before they were able to draw level.

The visitors dominated the third period - out-shooting their hosts 15-3 - and finally got their reward when Greg Wood found a way past Thomas Murdy in the Swindon net at 53.56.

With a shoot-out looming, a scramble in front of Murdy’s net saw the puck fall to Morgan, whose shot found a way through.

“I was not happy at end of the first 20 minutes but the lads responded well in the second,” said a delighted Payette.

“I was really proud of them in the third. That was the best we have played in Swindon for a long time and I am looking forward to facing them again on Sunday at home.”
