Steeldogs push Stingrays hard for an equal share

HULL Stingrays were pushed to the limit as they continued their pre-season preparations with a 5-5 draw at EPL outfit Sheffield Steeldogs.

Andre Payette’s side stunned their Elite League visitors when - having gone behind to a first-minute goal from Jason Silverthorn - took a 2-1 lead into the first period break thanks to strikes from Latvian forwards Janis Ozolins - who only returned to the UK on the morning of the match – and Edgar Bebris.

Stingrays, who saw first-choice netminder Christian Boucher forced to leave the ice midway through the first with a head injury - hit back to level early in the third when Dominic Osman struck in the 22nd minute. The visitors took the lead two minutes when British forward Matty Davies struck on the powerplay.

The 21-year-old - returning to East Yorkshire after leaving following a disagreement with the coaching staff midway through last season - doubled Hull’s lead with another powerplay strike on 33.35.

The home side got themselves back to within one goal within a minute however, although Sam McCluskey restored Hull’s two-goal advantage at 35.48.

Again the Steeldogs hit back to make it a one-goal game again before levelling matters early in the third to leave both sides sharing the honours at the end.
