Steelers crash out of Challenge Cup

Ice hockey: A miserable season at the hands of Nottingham Panthers continued for Sheffield Steelers last night as they were dumped out of the Challenge Cup.

Trailing 4-2 going into the second leg of the semi-final, Sheffield lost 3-1 last night, 7-3 on aggregrate.

Both teams cancelled each other out in the opening session, however, four minutes into the second period Panthers put Sheffield under a period of intense pressure and the puck fell to Kevin Bergin to deliver a hammer blow to Steelers' hopes.

Bruce Richardson looked to have ended Sheffield’s cup dream when he added a second before Doug Sheppard fired into the roof of the net, giving Steelers a glimmer of hope.

But despite having the better of the third period chances they could not find the net as Cameron Mann sealed the win with an empty net goal.
