Steelers end wait for Cup win

SHEFFIELD STEELERS finally ended their winless streak in the Challenge Cup with a 6-3 win over Yorkshire rivals Hull Stingrays.

Despite enjoying fine form in the league, the Steelers have encountered problems at the Group B stage of the competition, losing out to Cardiff and Coventry, while letting a three-goal led slip to end up with a 6-6 draw from their home tie with the Devils three weeks ago.

It was the visitors - looking to build on their 3-3 draw with Cardiff in the competition 10 days ago - who drew first blood at Ice Sheffield on Wednesday night, however, with Andrew Coburn firing home at 8.02.

But goals from Neil Clark and Jason Hewitt in the last three minutes of the first period gave Steelers a slender advantage going into the second.

Jereme Tendler pulled Sylvain Cloutier's side level in the 32nd minute with, like Coburn, his second in as many games, but Steelers' Jeff Legue made it a one-goal game again within a minute.

Legue grabeed his second of the night at 41.35 but Hull came back at the hosts yet again when Jason Silverhtorn grabbed his first of the season just over four minutes later.

Within 27 seconds, however, Joe Talbot had netted his 10th goal of the season and, as Hull pushed forward in search of a fourth, Ashley Tait made certain of two points for the home side when he scored with 15 seconds remaining.

While disappointed with the result, Hull coach Cloutier was impressed with how his side coped with one of the top-flight's in-form teams.

"We did not play that bad, there were a lot of positives," said Cloutier. "You could tell we haven't been together long while they have - but we were hanging in there and skating with them for the majority of the game.

"We worked hard for 60 minutes and we played well. We must stay positive.

"We have just played against the hottest team in the league right now and given them a game. Some of the mistakes we are making are ones you get at the start of the season. We will improve and get better."

SHEFFIELD STEELDOGS have moved to bolster their defensive options by bringing in former Hull Stingrays blue liner Adam Radmall.

The EPL team are currently languishing second-from-bottom in the table following disappointing defeats to Swindon Wildcats and Bracknell Bees last weekend.

It's hoped the 26-year-old - who also has Elite League experience with Coventry Blaze and Manchester Phoenix - will have an immediate impact on the Steeldogs' back line.

Radmall, from Nottingham, spent last season with EPL champions Milton Keynes Lightning but was not retained for the current campaign.
