Steelers hit back to avoid costly defeat

AN out-of-sorts Sheffield Steelers were forced to come from behind three times to beat the Dundee Stars 5-3 and stretch their lead at the top of the Elite League table.

Steelers were expected to easily win this game, but fell behind to an early goal from Jay Latulippe.

The league leaders struggled to find their rhythm and it was not until the 19th minute that they found the equaliser, a powerplay goal scrambled in by Joey Talbot.

Ervins Mustukovs has been a rock in Sheffield’s goal this season but let Sam McLuskey score from the halfway line on 26.39 before Neil Clark once again levelled midway through the game.

Another soft goal, scored by Peter Cartwright, restored the visitors’ lead, although it lasted only 47 seconds before Jeff Legue restored parity on 34 minutes. Jerramie Domish put Steelers ahead for the first time on 37.42.

An empty-net goal from player-coach Ben Simon with 69 seconds left sealed the win and established a nine-point gap over second-placed Belfast Giants, who have two games in hand and have to face the Steelers twice more before the end of the season.

Steelers welcome Hull Stingrays to the Motorpoint Arena on Saturday (7.00).
