Martin added an assist, while further goals from Brent Walton and Jake Morissette and a 24-shot shutout from Ben Bowns ensured the hosts took both points.

Sheffield remain three points adrift of the Clan in second place, level on points with Nottingham Panthers, who themselves failed to take the chance to close the gap as they went down 5-2 at Hull Stingrays.

Dominic Osman opened the scoring 14:57 into the first for the Stingrays but that effort was quickly cancelled out by Chris Higgins.

Robert Farmer then gave the Panthers the lead on the powerplay in the second period before Hull rallied and unanswered goals from Eric Galbraith, Carl Lauzon, Jordan Mayer and Zach Hervato wrapped things up.

Rene Jarolin’s second goal of the evening 3:04 into overtime earned Edinburgh Capitals a 2-1 win over Coventry Blaze, while James Isaacs, Igor Gongalsky and Kyle Gibbons gave Dundee Stars a 3-0 win at Fife Flyers.

On Saturday, Steelers extended their winning streak to five games by going some way to restoring the balance in the head-to-head ‘series’ between themselves and Nottingham Panthers.

Corey Neilson’s team arrived in South Yorkshire having won five of the previous seven meetings between them and the Steelers and went ahead again at 8.31 through Greg Jacina’s powerplay strike.

Steelers were ahead at the first break though after Jeff Legue’s 11th-minute leveller and a go-ahead powerplay goal from Mathieu Roy with just nine seconds left in the period.

Panthers were quickly level after the break through Charles Landry, but Steelers’ top goalscorer Mike Forney restored his team’s one-goal advantage on the powerplay at 28.46.

With chances going spare at both ends, the nerves of the home supporters weren’t settled, however, until Roy struck with an empty-net strike with 25 seconds of the third period remaining.
