Steelers’ start time in line with rivals

Sheffield Steelers’ final match of the Elite League campaign has been put back one hour to 6pm to correspond with all other games taking place this Sunday in what is expected to be a thrilling climax to the regular season.

Player-coach Ben Simon’s team are locked in a three-way battle for the league title with the Cardiff Devils and the Belfast Giants. The Steelers head into the final weekend level on points at the top with Cardiff, with Belfast a point further back.

The South Yorkshire club – who visit the Braehead Clan on Saturday before welcoming their Scottish hosts back to Sheffield 24 hours later – will clinch the title if they win both games, due to them having won more games in regulation than their two rivals.

Steelers’ forward Ashley Tait, meanwhile, could cap another fine season after making the final list of nominations for the Best British Player in the annual league awards.

Tait, 35, has proved a key figure since returning from a season in Italy and is third in the Steelers’ scoring ranks with 24 goals and 50 assists, 14th overall in the league.

He faces stiff competition from Belfast netminder Stephen Murphy and Nottingham Panthers’ forward David Clarke.

Steelers’ reserve netminder Geoff Woolhouse has been added to the initial Great Britain squad ahead of two friendlies against the Netherlands on Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10.
