Stewart sprints away to Abergavenny win

Doncaster pro cycling ace Tom Stewart sprinted to victory in the latest round of the '¨National Road Series, the Grand Prix of Wales, in Abergavenny yesterday.

The 26-year-old from Cusworth near Doncaster – who has already won the prestigious Lincoln Grand Prix and Velothon Wales in a rewarding spell this season – added the Grand Prix of Wales to his list of 2016 victories as he boosted his tally in the Series.

The 182-kilometre race took in three laps of a tough circuit which included several hard climbs of Grosmont, before tackling 10 laps of a smaller circuit near Abergavenny.

Stewart was part of a break of 15 riders which went clear early in the race and stayed away until they reached the smaller circuit for the first time.

Having been chased down by rival teams, the Madison Genesis team sat in and waited until the closing stages of the race when several of their riders – including Stewart – attacked in the hope of a solo win.

Stewart was joined by
team-mate Erick Rowsell in a group of three just off the front in the final lap, and it was
Stewart who had the legs to win, with Rowsell second and Series leader Chris lawless (JLT Condor) third.

Another Yorkshire rider, Tickhill’s Russell Downing (JLT Condor) took fourth.
