Stingrays on the up after making gains over Capitals

A five-goal, third-period blitz saw Omar Pacha’s team return home from Murrayfield on the back of a 6-3 win, adding to the 3-2 triumph they enjoyed over the Capitals on home ice 24 hours earlier.

Combined with results elsewhere, the four-point haul was enough to see Stingrays lift themselves out of the bottom two and into ??? spot in the overall standings.

After going behind to a first period strike from Rene Jarolin, Jordan Mayer levelled just after the halfway point to leave the third period finely poised.

But a strong start to the final section saw Stingrays establish a lead they ultimately held on to quite comfortably.

Two goals in just over a minute from Cory Tanaka and Mayer gave them a two-goal cushion and although Edinburgh twice pulled back to within one through strikes from Jade Portwood and Greg Collins, further strikes from Carl Lauzon and Will Frederick, followed by Mayer’s hat-trick marker at 56.15 ensured Hull could head into tomorrow’s clash at Cardiff Devils in buoyant mood.

On Saturday, although Capitals player-coach Richard Hartmann’s late strike ensured a nervous final few seconds for Hull, the 3-2 win for Pacha’s team was fully deserved.

Ahead through Zach Hervato’s 11th-minute strike - cancelled out by Kyle Flemington at 21.43 - further goals from Jordan Knox - his first for the club - and a neatly-taken short-handed third from captain Matty Davies early in the third proved enough for both points.

Understandably, Pacha was delighted with his team’s weekend as he headed back down to East Yorkshire.

“It was a great team performance,” said Pacha. “We took control early on, played a solid road game and capitalised on our chances.

“We rolled three lines all through the game and had five ‘D’. They all worked hard and we had a lot of energy in the third period and took advantage.

“We got production from all three lines, all the forwards played well and chipped in. Jordan had not scored for a couple of games but he is a goalscorer and got three big goals.

“The four-point weekend puts us right back in the mix and we go into another big game in Cardiff on Tuesday with some confidence.”
