Stourbridge 19 Wharfedale 24: Bedworth is century man

Mark Bedworth became the 20th Wharfedale player to celebrate his 100th league appearance as they shaded a scrappy match.

They recovered from 14-0 down after 30 minutes and then coped with a difficult second-half spell when reduced to 13 men.

Lapses in central defence allowed Stourbridge to surge into the lead with stand-off Sam Robinson converting tries from winger Charlie Fellows and lock Oliver Atkinson.

The Greens opened their account when James Tincknell, growing in confidence with every match, powered his way down his wing, handing off a tackle before slipping to centre Chris Malherbe for a try in the corner.

Sloppy play by Stourbridge gifted the ball to Latu Maka'afi, and the Greens' leading try-scorer ran in from halfway, Mark Bedworth converting.

The visitors went in front in stoppage time with a well-worked try from concerted pressure, winger David Hall going over by the flag. Bedworth belied an erratic kicking performance with a super conversion.

Stourbridge opted to concentrate on the power of their pack and when Wharfedale prop Adam Mason and No 8 Rob Baldwin were sin-binned by referee Andrew Vertigan in the 58th and 59th minutes, things looked bleak for the Greens. But they held out, with just one unconverted try conceded, from substitute lock Rupert Cooper.

Back to full strength, the Dalesmen conjured the best move, Hall rounding off fine approach work by centre Andy Hodgson and full-back Luke Gray to clinch the bonus point.
