Strength showing through for Electrolyser

TRAINER Clive Cox has provided an upbeat progress report about Electrolyser ahead of next month’s Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup.

The six-year-old has earned a reputation as one of the most consistent stayers in British racing.

Last season Electrolyser finished third to Illustrious Blue in the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot before chasing home the same rival when second in the Group 2 Goodwood Cup.

The son of Daylami has also shown solid form at York, finishing a close fourth to Opinion Poll in the Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup last August.

Cox, who trains at Lambourn, has been pleased with his charge’s progress over the winter and is looking forward to another fruitful campaign in staying races.

He said: “Electrolyser has done extremely well over the winter and seems to have strengthened up.

“He’s in the Yorkshire Cup and it would be a possible target for him as he ran a good race in the Lonsdale last year.

“I would be keen to run but it would very much depend on the ground as he would not want it too firm.”

The Group Two Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup – to be staged over one mile, six furlongs on May 13 – is one of the races that underpins York’s prestigious three-day Dante Festival and features developing stayers as well as hardened campaigners.

This year’s renewal could see the progressive four-year-old Dandino, successful at Ripon last Saturday, line up against more experienced rivals such as Fame And Glory, who won a Listed race at Navan on his seasonal bow at the weekend.

This year’s Yorkshire Cup renewal also carries added lustre as it is the first staying race of the 2011 season to be staged under the new QIPCO British Champions Series banner.
