Surgery for Fletcher after ankle injury in Canada

Great Britain international showjumper Tina Fletcher is to undergo surgery after suffering a serious ankle injury while competing in Canada.

Fletcher, who was the reserve rider for Britain’s London 2012 gold medal-winning team of Nick Skelton, Ben Maher, Scott Brash and Peter Charles, fell from Hello Sailor during the CN International Grand Prix at Spruce Meadows.

Fletcher’s horse crashed through the second element of a double, throwing her to the ground before she was dragged along the floor after her leg caught in the reins.

She is understood to have suffered ligament damage, while one of the horse’s shoe studs went into her Achilles’ tendon.

“She is in considerable pain,” Fletcher’s husband Graham said.

“She’s going to have surgery when we get back, so we will know more then.”

Fletcher, 47, was travelling reserve with Hello Sailor for the Olympics.

A cross-country clinic with Nicola Wilson and fences from London 2012 are among the highlights at the Allerton Park Horse Trials this weekend.

Allerton Park has secured two of the cross country fences that were part of the Olympic legacy, namely Chestnut Logs and East End Barrows.

East End Barrows will be the final fence on the new advanced course and two of the magnificent Chestnut Logs will feature in the advanced track at the water complex.

Meanwhile, Olympic silver medallist Wilson will be conducting a cross-country clinic for combinations competing at BE90 and above.

Each session will be for two hours in groups of four to suit each individual’s ability and standard. Cost is £70 per horse/rider combination.

All fences will be dressed and flagged as the clinic will take place on Monday, the day after the final event.
