Sylvester and Daley frustrated as Oldham wins gold

SHEFFIELD diver Megan Sylvester cut a forlorn figure after failing to make a splash at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore – but she vowed to put things right at next month's World Junior Championships.

The 16-year-old arrived in the Lion City riding the crest of a wave, having bagged European Championships bronze with 10m synchro platform partner Monique Gladding in Budapest last month.

And while she sailed through qualification for Saturday's final in Singapore, the 2008 European junior silver medallist could only manage 351.60 points – good enough for 10th place.

Sylvester, however, has little time to dwell on her disappointment and will immediately turn her attentions to the World Junior Championships in Tucson, Arizona – and she pledged to prove her Singapore disappointment is merely a blip across the pond.

"I am disappointed because the qualifying went really well and I was quite excited going into the final. I was looking forward to competing again and feeling good about it," said Sylvester.

"But then in the final it just didn't go the way I would have liked at all so I am disappointed. I wanted to do well in the final but it didn't work out.

"But I can take a lot of experience from and try and progress from here especially with the world junior champs coming up next week.

"I need to learn from this and get better and then hopefully do a lot better at the world juniors."

Sylvester may have flattered to deceive in Singapore but she was in unfamiliar surroundings in the Far East and had not competed in a junior event for two years.

But with another junior excursion on the horizon, Sylvester vowed to make a bigger impact among her peers next time out.

"I haven't done a junior event for two years but that is not really an excuse," she added.

"I just have to take the experience out of it and look ahead to the world junior champs and try and learn from this and have a better performance there."

A poor third dive cost Tom Daley, though, as the 16-year-old could only manage ninth in the three-metre springboard final in which China's Qiu Bo took gold.

Sam Oldham won Team GB's third gold medal and eighth overall at the Youth Olympic Games after a faultless routine saw the Nottingham gymnast triumph in the men's horizontal bar final.

Charlie Grice ran a personal best and benefited from Abdelhadi Labali's disqualification to win bronze in the boys' 1000m.

And on Saturday, Oldham won silver in the men's pommel horse final while David Bolarinwa claimed bronze in the boys 100 metres.
