Tendler hopeful of picking up awards

The 29-year-old Canadian is up for the Player of the Year and Forward of the Year awards.

In his third season with the East Yorkshire club – who missed out on the play-offs – Tendler was his team’s leading point-scorer with 69 points in 59 games, as well as being the league’s most prolific marksman with 43 goals.

Tendler also has the joint-second highest number of powerplay markers in the competition with 12 and a league-high seven short-handed strikes.

Tendler’s team-mates, Ben Bowns and Matty Davies were yesterday named in Great Britain head coach Tony Hand’s 40-man preliminary squad ahead of next month’s World Championship (Division 1A) in Budapest.

Sheffield Steelers, who play their two-legged play-off quarter-final this weekend against Coventry Blaze this weekend are represented by six players in the provisional squad.

Forwards Jason Hewitt, Jonathan Phillips and Ashley Tait are joined by defenceman Danny Meyers and Mark Thomas, as well as reserve netminder Geoff Woolhouse.

Steelers’ defenceman Rod Sarich is unavailable for selection.
