Thompson takes his leave

HULL STINGRAYS forward Shaun Thompson has left the club after asking to be released.

The 22-year-old former Great Britain junior international was signed last summer having posted 17 goals for Basingstoke Bison last season and was their fourth-highest point-scorer.

But he has struggled to make an impact in East Yorkshire under player-coach Sylvain Cloutier, managing just one goal and 10 assists in 41 games.

As a result, he has seen limited ice time in recent weeks, prompting the 22-year-old to ask to be released, say the club. He is now expected to join a team in the EPL.

"Shaun came here off a big year in Basingstoke but he has not put up the numbers any of us thought he would," said Cloutier.

"It is disappointing that he wants to leave but I would like to thank Shaun for his efforts and for helping us out and we wish him all the best for the future."

Sheffield Steelers, meanwhile, are set to add another new face to their roster as they attempt to salvage something from a disappointing season.

Mike Sgroi is set to make his debut at Ice Sheffield against Cardiff Deveils on Friday and should be joined in the Steelers ranks by another new forward in time for next wednesday's Challenge Cup semi-final, first leg against Nottingham Panthers.

GM Mike O'Connor said: "We have agreed terms with another new player.

"We have a slight passport issue with this guy but I am confident this guy will be with us well in time for Wednesday's first leg of the Challenge Cup against the Panthers."
