Thompson wraps up Winter Series title in style

SCORING her sixth win of the competition, Seonaid Thompson wrapped up the overall women’s Velo29 Winter Series title in fitting style with victory in the final round at the Croft Racing Circuit in North Yorkshire.

The Leeds 29-year-old came out on top in a three-up sprint after seven laps of action, getting the better of second-placed Angela Hibbs (Team WattCycle) and Scarborough Paragon CC’s Louise Scupham, 17.

It left Thompson, who rides for Leeds-based Albarosa CC, seven points clear of Hibbs in the final standings.

Harrogate’s Julian Varley had to settle for third place in another three-rider sprint at the finish of the feature 15-lap men’s race as victory went to Alex Dalton (Squadra RT), but it secured second place in the overall table for the 18-year-old behind clear winner Andrew Scorey (Berwick Wheelers CC).

Albarosa CC finished third in the overall team standings, incorporating all categories and age groups, behind winners Team WattCycle and Achieve Northside Skinnergate.

In time trials, Team Swift’s Andy Jackson was rewarded for an early-morning trip to the East Midlands with second place in Kettering CC’s Hilly 20-mile event over a sporting one-lap course based on Lowick.

Jackson’s time of 43-30 was only beaten by multi-British champion Matt Bottrill (www.drag2zero.com) whose 41-52, in windy conditions, beat his own course record from 2013 by 19 seconds.
