Toulouse are made to fight all the way to avoid shock loss

Head coach Tony Hanks was proud of his players after Wasps yesterday went close to pulling off a surprise victory at reigning Heineken Cup champions Toulouse in Pool Six.

David Skrela booted all of the home side's points with six penalties in the south of France.

But Wasps almost claimed a famous triumph after David Lemi grabbed the only try of the game in the second half while fly-half Dave Walder missed a late minute penalty as the visitors succumbed 18-16.

Hanks said: "There's real disappointment in our changing room. We came here to win and didn't just come here to make up the numbers.

"It didn't matter what anyone else thought. There was enough belief within our side and we prepared well.

"There were some special moments such as David's try and the way we kept hold of the ball.

"And we were excellent in defence for the second week in a row but Toulouse are a quality side and they just kept coming at us.

"But I'm really proud of the players. What we need to make sure of is that people aren't just talking about what we did in round one. We have to kick on next week because we still want to qualify from this pool."

Wasps were without England front-rowers Tim Payne and Phil Vickery through suspension and injury as well as Riki Flutey who remained at home to be at the impending birth of his third child.

But the Aviva Premiership outfit held their own for long spells before having the chance to steal victory through Walder's penalty.

Toulouse's Census Johnston conceded the 78th-minute penalty which nearly gave Wasps the perfect return to Europe's premier competition after a one-year absence.

And the Samoan prop, who was named man of the match, admits he was a relieved man when Walder saw his long-range attempt drift wide.

"I was devastated when the penalty was awarded and I was pretty nervous because I thought I was a little bit unlucky," he said.

"But having a look at the video again I had to let it go at that stage. I was praying that it didn't go over and luckily it didn't."
