Tupai and Hopa seal relegation battle win

Two late converted tries brought Beverley a 24-10 victory over Yorkshire rivals Sandal which left them level-pegging in the fight for the probable remaining safety position.

In a hard-fought encounter, Beverley took the lead on the stroke of half-time with a try by flanker Brendon Hannam.

Sandal went in front at the start of the second half with a try and conversion by fly-half Greg Wood but Beverley quickly restored their lead with a try by centre Sam Atiola.

Wood levelled with a dropped goal but further tries by captain Junior Tupai and lock Fraley Hopa, both converted by Tupai, saw Beverley to a comfortable victory.

Morley claimed a bonus point in their 43-31 defeat at Chester.

The visitors led by 10 points at half-time. Left-winger Simon Bradshaw gave his side the lead with a converted try on six minutes and extended the advantage to 10-0 with a penalty five minutes later.

Chester hit back with a converted score before second-row Tom Clough picked up his first try for the Maroons on 17 minutes and Bradshaw converted to make it 17-7.

A third try from right winger Kobi Gyasi made it 24-4 with five minutes of the half remaining, only for a lapse in concentration to allow Chester some hope with a second converted try two minutes before the whistle.

A depleted Morley started to run out of steam after the break, once the hosts had scored a third try to come back within five points.

Four further tries and two conversions in the space of 16 minutes put the game to bed.

However, there was still time for one last-ditch effort and No 8 Tom Clough rounded things off for Morley.

Bradford and Bingley enjoyed a 40-11 home win over Penrith, who took an early lead through Steve Wood’s penalty before Stewart Brewer crossed for Gavin Stead to strike the first of five conversions.

Wood slotted another penalty but tries from Bees captain Guy Ford, Richard Scull and Brett Mitchell helped make it 33-6 at the break.

Winger Jon Fell scored a try for the visitors before man of the match Jason Moss rumbled over for the final try.

Moss was part of a dominant Bees front row including Ryan Wederall and James Brown.
