Unbeaten Limato has Redcar prize in sights

HENRY CANDY’S Limato puts his unbeaten record on the line as he chases a first prize of £117,200 in the totepool Two-Year-Old Trophy – Redcar’s richest race of the year.

The horse won twice on the all weather at Kempton before stepping up in class to take the Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury under James Doyle, the jockey associated with the recently retired Kingman.

This form is significant – back in second was the Charlie Hills-trained Cotai Glory who had the Group Two Polypipe Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster’s Ladbrokes St Leger meeting at his mercy before unshipping George Baker in the shadow of the winning post.

Significantly, Hills believes Cotai Glory could be a significant player in tomorrow’s Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp and has booked the in-form Ryan Moore for the ride.

Limato will have a new jockey today – Bedale’s Graham Lee takes over from Doyle – and should have enough in hand over his 22 rivals in this six furlong cavalry charge.

Charlie Appleby will use today’s BMW Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot to determine the next big assignment for his Godolphin stable star Encke.

The 2012 Ladbrokes Leger winner, who missed last year through an enforced ban, has been steadily picking up the pieces and finished a good second on his return to the reopposing Pether’s Moon in the Glorious Stakes at Goodwood.

Most recently, in the Irish Leger, he was third and rather caught out by the brilliant front-running effort from Richard Kingscote and Brown Panther.

“He proved he was still competitive over a mile and a half at Goodwood, and if he were to win, I suppose the Canadian International would be an option,” said Appleby.
