Vickerman eager to end era on a high

Rob Vickerman has urged his team-mates to end the era of Leeds Carnegie with a trophy after their promotion dream came up short at London Welsh yesterday, writes Nick Westby.

Leeds lost agonisingly over two legs in the play-off semi-final, meaning Friday night’s British and Irish Cup final with Leinster A will not only be the last game of the season, but also the last under the banner of Leeds.

The club will become known as Yorkshire Carnegie from next season and Vickerman said: “It would be nice to finish a successful year with a rare trophy for Leeds.

“There’s a lot of sorry faces right now, but we are not the type of team to wallow in our self-pity. We’ll stick our chests out and go and finish this season on a high.”

Vickerman missed the last half-hour after being stretchered off, a measure he insists was merely a precaution.

In the time he was on the pitch, even though Leeds were ahead of Welsh on aggregate, Vickerman felt they were not as accomplished as they had been in the first leg.

“We are a young team and we were a little over-enthusiastic, and sometimes that catches you out against a gnarled team of veterans,” he said.

“But we are not hiding away from the fact that we came here to try and play rugby.”
