RUSSIA has been named as host of the 2018 World Cup, ending England's hopes of holding the biggest football event on the planet. Follow events unfold here.

Fifa's 22-man executive committee has voted in Zurich today with Russia awarded the hosting rights after beating rivals England and joint bids between Spain/Portugal and Holland/Belgium.

The winner of the 2022 vote is Qatar who prevailed over Japan, South Korea, United States and Australia.

The news that England had lost was greeted with despair across the country, particularly in the 12 cities that were to host matches should the bid have been successful.

Sheffield's Hillsborough stadium which was one of the chosen venues, but in the city, they were remaining optimistic.

City Council leader Paul Scriven said: "Whilst we are disappointed with the outcome and today's news, everyone associated with England's bid should be congratulated.

"It was an excellent submission in which Sheffield played a major part.

"On a personal note I would like to thank the Sheffield bid team for all their hard work and acknowledge all the support we received from so many people and organisations across the city, including our two professional football clubs.

"The city will benefit from the work of the bid team which has seen local sporting organisations work together for the benefit of the community, whilst at the same time Sheffield profiled on a national and international stage."
