As a result of his decision, the 37-year-old says he will focus on this year’s World Championships in Manchester before attempting to land a fourth Commonwealth gold medal in Australia.

Regarded as one of the most successful players of his generation, three-time world champion and former world No 1 Matthew will remain in the game through the work of his squash academies in the UK and USA.

“It’s not sad,” said Matthew on Momnday morning. “I’m really excited by the opportunity ahead in my last season ahead on the tour.

Matthew said he will plan his final season on the PSA Tour deliberately, in order to be at his prime for what he rgards as his priority events. After the Commonwealth Games, the British Open returns to Hull giving Matthew the chance to win the crown for a fourth time.

“I’m so privileged to have met so many people and shared so many memories along the way. I’ve had all the threes, three World titles, three Commonwealth Games gold medals and three British Opens so, hopefully, I can get a fourth of one those this season.”

“This is my 20th season on the world tour, but I’ve been playing since the age of eight and have made so many friends around the world.”
