Warrington Wolves 35 Hull KR 16: Hull KR pay maximum price for Newton's lack of discipline

Engage super league: HULL KR were unable to take advantage of Warrington being without half-a-dozen regulars as the hosts moved to within two points of leaders Wigan.

Lee Briers scored two tries, five goals and a drop-goal for Warrington who only led 6-4 until Australian forward Clint Newton was sin-binned by referee Ian Smith midway through the second half. Warrington ran in three touchdowns in Newton's absence to secure victory.

Newton's high tackle on Louis Anderson early on sparked a brief fracas. Shaun Briscoe, left out of the England squad, then went close as Rovers hit back and they snatched the lead with Kris Welham's well-worked try.

Michael Dobson sprinted into the line and his precision kick bounced kindly for the centre.

But then Briers intercepted Ben Galea's pass to sprint 90 metres to score and booted the touchline conversion to edge the Wolves ahead 6-4. Welham came to Rovers' rescue to thwart another dangerous Warrington attack and left his side trailing by two points at the break.

A high tackle by Liam Watts on Briers put Rovers under pressure early in the second half and Lee Mitchell went close.

Mick Vella's handling mistake added to Rovers' troubles before Newton's sin-binning in the 54th minute for an illegal tackle proved costly for Rovers with Briscoe halting Grix with a desperate effort before Louis Anderson forced his way over for a converted try.

Then Briers took Matt King's pass to make it 18-4 and Rovers were still down to 12 men when Ben Fisher failed to deal with a kick and Ryan Atkins accepted the gift.

Mike Ratu went over for Hull KR nine minutes from time and Dobson converted before Briers dropped a goal.

Monaghan added a fifth try for Warrington with Briers tagging on his fourth conversion from five attempts.

Ben Fisher grabbed a late effort for Rovers who were left ruing Newton's misdemeanour.
