Wheatley Hills 19

WHEATLEY Hills notched their third straight victory but were made to sweat by hosts Carlisle who led with two minutes remaining.

A late try from winger Jamie Webb helped the Doncaster side win but with no bonus points this season, Wheatley are only fourth, with their high-scoring rivals above them.

Wheatley soon opened a 14-0 lead. From a lineout catch and drive, No 8 Gareth Burns touched down after eight minutes and centre Guy Townsley added a conversion.

Townsley was on target once again from out wide, converting a 13th-minute try from second-row Andrew Penno.

Carlisle pulled back a penalty on 25 minutes through Grant Cannon and with Wheatley having two players sin-binned in the second half, Cannon's second penalty on 66 minutes was followed by a try from replacement centre Barry Earl. Cannon added the conversion as well as a penalty on 78 minutes to put his side 16-14 ahead.

Wheatley kept the pressure up and Webb dived in at the corner to claim the win.

Cleckheaton No 8 Richard Piper was red-carded for head-butting and his side were down to 12 men in the closing stages when fellow forwards Turner and Piercy were yellow-carded, but still held on for victory.

The match was uneventful until just before the break when Piper forced a touchdown which Iain Gordon converted from out wide.

From the restart, the home side were revitalised and immediately showed more cohesion, instigating a rolling maul which went 30 metres to the line, Piper again claiming the touchdown with Gordon adding the extras.

With 20 minutes of the second half gone, winger Ross Hayden went through and Gordon converted.

Driffield then exploited their numerical superiority to score a try through Havler and a penalty before the final whistle.

Morpeth 32

Pontefract 28

Pontefract recovered from conceding three tries in a

four-minute spell in the first half to claim two bonus points but could not quite claim victory despite playing some entertaining rugby.

Having conceded an early penalty, Pontefract went ahead when Nev Bateman went over and Andy Dean added the conversion.

A purple patch from Morpeth saw them charge into a 20-7 lead before Pontefract started to fight back when Simon Spears latched onto a pass from Bateman to go over.

The home side crossed again to turn round 25-14 in front and they stretched that with a converted try three minutes after the break.

With 20 minutes to go, Bateman grabbed his second try to raise their hopes. Five minutes later, he clinched his hat-trick, Dean again slotting the conversion, but despite having the momentum, they were unable to score again.

Old Brodleians 31

Old Crossleyans 13

A powerful second-half display clinched victory for Brodleians in an entertaining game in which the visitors ultimately paid the penalty for making so many mistakes.

Jack Moon put the home side on the way with a 40m break that resulted in a try for Andy Clay, converted by Ollie Ackroyd, who added a penalty.

Crossleyans hit back with a try from player-coach Chris Jones which he then converted and an exchange of penalties saw the sides turn round just three points apart.

Another Brodleians penalty was met by Crossleyans' best spell but that only resulted in a successful kick from Jones before the home side stamped their authority on the game.

Ackroyd landed another penalty and scrum-half Joe Armitage scrambled over from close range.

With five minutes left, flanker Andy Finn ran in his fourth try

of the season to clinch a well-deserved win.
