West Leeds step up treble bid as Morley clinch promotion

Wharfedale winger Oli Cicognini's late try was of little consolation for Yorkshire as their County Championship campaign continued to disappoint.

Cheshire ran out 29-7 winners at Heywood Road, with Yorkshire’s try coming late in the match. The hosts scored all their points in the first half, and defended well throughout the second period.

Full-back Tom Foden and Jack Lavin gave Cheshire a great start with two early tries, and after Lavin had kicked a penalty he chipped through and grounded the ball under the posts for his second score.

Cheshire’s next try came when Foden chipped up field again, and this time winger Jack Leach touched down, Lavin scoring to put his side 29-0 ahead.

Yorkshire had moments of good play late in the game as they enjoyed better periods of possession, and it from this that Cicognini touched down.

RFU Senior Vase winners and Yorkshire Two champions West Leeds remain on track to adding the Yorkshire Shield to their trophy cabinet after beating Pontefract 48-20 in their semi-final. Winger Danny Booth scored four of West Leeds’ tries as they powered into the final next Sunday, where they will take on Bradford and Bingley. Full-back Stuart Sanderson scored a hat-trick of tries for Pontefract.

Bradford and Bingley will take on West Leeds after edging past Keighley 20-16.

Centre Richard Tapper scored a try and kicked a conversion and penalty to put his side 10-8 ahead at the break, with winger Sam Walker having touched down for Keighley and Alex Brown kicking a penalty.

The Bees’ second-half try came from Brett Mitchell, with Tapper adding the conversion and a second penalty. Scrum-half Rob Wilkinson scored Keighley’s second-half try.

The top two sides in Yorkshire Three, Wetherby will play Thornensians in the final of the Yorkshire Silver Trophy after the semi finals.

Thorne ran in four tries on their way to a 26-14 home win over Goole. Wetherby earned a 22-14 win at Northallerton in their semi final.

In the Northern Division play-offs, Morley secured a place in National Three (North) with a dramatic 38-33 extra-time win over hosts Kirkby Lonsdale.

The Cumbria side were 14-13 ahead at half-time, and the sides were level at 26-26 at the end of 80 minutes. But Morley secured the win in extra time.
