Westwood up to No 3 in world

LEE WESTWOOD has reached the position of world No 3 for the first time in his career.

Entering this week's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, Westwood has moved ahead of Steve Stricker after good performances at the US MAsters and the Players Championship and is now only behind Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

Champions East Riding began the defence of their Yorkshire Inter-Union League crown with a narrow 20-16 win over Teesside at Eaglescliffe.

The teams were tied after the morning foursomes before East Riding pulled clear in the singles.

Leeds overcame a 9-3 deficit after the foursomes to beat Halifax-Huddersfield 20-16 at Woodsome Hall.

Bradford drew 18-18 with York at Malton & Norton, while Sheffield beat Harrogate 21-15 at Bawtry.
