Wharfedale 31 Cambridge 28: Davidson on target as Greens grab dramatic win

A SPLENDID match ended in the most dramatic fashion, with Wharfedale claiming the winning score in the final frantic action.

A home victory looked somewhat fanciful in the early stages, as Cambridge wingers Michael Ayrton and Jaco du Toit went in for tries converted by scrum-half Ben Spencer.

Wharfedale responded as centres Andrew Hodgson and Chris Malherbe sent in winger James Druce, stand-off Tom Barrett adding the conversion.

Aryton’s second converted try, made it 21-7 but a brace of tries by centre Chris Malherbe had closed the gap by the break.

Substitute back Tom Davidson muscled over for his side’s fourth try but du Toit sprinted through to the posts, leaving Spencer a simple conversion.

Davidson then sent a penalty to touch on the 22, and the ensuing drives took the Greens close enough for flanker Dan Solomi to grab the winning try and set off ecstatic celebrations after Davidson’s conversion heralded the final whistle.
