Whitaker helps to anchor in for silver

GREAT Britain finished in second place in the second leg of the Meydan FEI Nations Cup in Rome.

The team's anchorman, Yorkshire's John Whitaker, had a challenging ride with Peppermill, finishing with a single pole down in the first round and Nick Skelton and Ben Maher also had faults.

However, the four-man team finished the second round with a zero score thanks to clear rounds from John, Ben Maher riding Robin Hood W and Nick Skelton with Carlo 273.

The other Great Britain team member, Peter Charles, riding Murkah's Pom d'Ami, had one rail down.

First place went to the French squad with Ireland and Spain sharing third place.

The result means that Great Britain are now in second place on the series points table.

John Whitaker and Peppermill also finished in second place in Sunday afternoon's Loro Piana Grand Prix after producing one of only four double clear rounds in the competition.

SKIPTON Building Society is to be a major sponsor of Skipton Horse Trials for the next three years.

The new deal will see the horse trials rebranded to become the Skipton Building Society Horse Trials.

The two events will take place on June 26 and 27 and August 7 and 8 at Funkirk Farm, Carleton, Skipton.

Paul White, event director, said Skipton Building Society had pledged its support up to and including 2012.

"This will enable visitors to see at first hand a number of Great Britain's international competitors, some of whom are expected to ride at London 2012."
