Willstrop and Matthew enjoy safe passage in Manchester

Pontefract’s James Willstrop eased into the second round of the British National Squash Championships in Manchester with an 11-2, 11-5, 11-1 win over Kevin Moran.

Second seed Willstrop will now face Charles Sharpes, who was sorely tested by Scottish qualifier Dougi Kempsell before coming through 11-9 in the fifth after 84 minutes.

Speaking to the crowd afterwards Willstrop said: “It’s great to be here in Manchester, every tournament this year is helping us to build towards the Commonwealth Games. The Games is a big deal for us, it gives squash a bigger profile and is definitely a huge target for all of the English players.

“Obviously, I’d like do well here at the Nationals first though.”

Top seed Nick Matthew, from Sheffield, set up a second round clash with Greg Lobban after beating Lyell Fuller 11-7, 11-2, 11-4.

“He was definitely up for it,” said Matthew, who is aiming for a record sixth title,

“There was no escaping from him on Twitter for the last 24 hours! I had to take him seriously, I was 18 myself once and I know what it’s like to be young and hungry.”

Chris Simpson based in Harrogate, beat Robbie Temple in four games, Temple saving coming back from 10-6 down in the third to extend the match 15-13, and almost pulling off another recovery in the fourth as he rallied from 4-10 down only to lose it 11-9.
