Wilson has plenty of options at Thirsk

Seven competitions will take place over today and tomorrow with Northallerton’s world no 13 Wilson having four horses entered for Novice duty and five at BE100 level.

At the other end of the rider experience spectrum, 18-year-old Chloe Bell, daughter of organiser Helen, has Java Spice ready for junior under-18s action with Leo III also entered in a BE100.

And the rider’s organiser mum is delighted with the development of an event that will also raise funds over the weekend for the MRI Scanner appeal at the Friarage Hospital Northallerton with an online auction. International course builder and designer David Evans is in his third year working with Breckenbrough and Bell hopes there is something for everyone over the course of the weekend.

“We have made some changes and we’re always looking to provide an educating and inviting course,” Helen told The Yorkshire Post.

“Being a British Eventing coach, I am keen for educational cross country courses that help the horse and rider improve and learn.

“We also run a lot of clinics training and after the event this weekend subject to the weather I will teaching on the cross country courses.

“We have a busy time from April to October with clubs and various people renting the facilities from us to run their own competitions camps.

“We also have our own shooting and country wear shop on site – Northallerton Shooting and Countrywear – so there’s something on offer other than horses.”

Other notable entries include Great Britain junior team hopeful Storm Straker who has both Well Designed and William Wordsworth listed for Intermediate Open Novice under-21 action.

A few years younger, organiser Helen’s own daughter Chloe is also going well and will arrive with a spring in her step having celebrated her 18th birthday on March 10. Helen added: “Chloe has started the season well with a second at Burgham Intermediate on Javas Spice and is aiming for Junior Trials Under-21 at Belton and then Brand Hall Junior National Championships.”

The Vale Of York Club Pony Club finished a highly creditable ninth out of 19 teams representing Area 3 in the Pony Club Quiz National Area Final at the Addington Manor Equestrian Centre in Buckinghamshire.

The team, including 11-year-old Anna Lawton-Taylor, Lucy Williams, 13, Lydia Keeping, 16 and 19-year-old Catherine Dalton, bagged first place in the inter-area which landed them a spot against the best Pony Club teams in the country in the final.

Lucy also attended the Pony Club Dengie National Intermediate Dressage Championships with her 12- year-old Dutch Warmblood Cross, Daedalus LL, and secured a 12th-placed finish out of 18 riders with 65 per cent.

Lucy said: “It was a brilliant weekend for Vale of York and for the team it was an achievement to even get this far into the championships. We were already our own champions!”

The Yorkshire Area point-to-point season continues with tomorrow’s Bedale point-to-point at Hornby Castle where racing starts at 1.30pm.

Admission is £10 per person and the postcode is DL8 1NQ but racegoers are advised to exit the A1 at Catterick and go back to the course from there, rather than going through Bedale itself. The hunt supporters will also be selling homemade food to refresh racegoers throughout the day and the McClarrons Insurance big screen will be showing the Grand National (5.15pm) after the last point-to-point race.
