Wilson milestone celebration as Hinchcliffe penalty pinches win

An eight-try demolition of visitors Stourbridge stamped Hull Ionians intentions and credentials on their campaign.

Stourbridge, a physically imposing outfit, started well and had the hosts defending on their own line but once the ball was cleared, the home side dominated the remainder of the half.

Leaders Ionians soon got the upper hand and went on to win 50-13 with tries coming from Lawrence Cowen, Adam Thomas, Stephen Slingsby, Alistair Thomson, Samuel Wilson, James Ferguson and Ben Smith.

It was fitting that Wilson got his name on the scoresheet with the winger celebrating his 100th appearance for Ionians.

Joel Hinchliffe kept his nerve to land a last-gasp penalty and give Huddersfield a 31-30 win at Preston Grasshoppers.

Huddersfield took the lead when Ben Mitchell went over and even though the home side countered to lead 7-5, Austen Thompson restored the lead with a try converted by Hinchliffe.

An exchange of penalties saw Huddersfield start the second half 15-10 up and they quickly extended that to 25-10 when Chris Bell went over and Hinchliffe succeeded with the conversion and another penalty.

A Preston purple patch saw them draw level and then, after another Hinchliffe penalty, grab what looked like the winning try. But an offside decision gave Hinchliffe a final chance and his kick was clinical.

Otley were never allowed to settle by second-placed Ampthill whose forceful running and accurate passing earned them a 41-10 home win.

Winger Gareth Clarke, flanker Joe Bercis and fly-half Joe Tarrant scored first-half tries.

Matt Heaton replied but converted tries came from Tarrant and winger Darrell Dyer before Otley winger Alex Beaumont replied only for Tarrant to race in again.

Hull continue to struggle and they conceded seven tries in a 47-15 hammering at Sedgley Park, who scored four tries in the opening half.

Hull’s response was apenalty by James Cameron and converted try from on-loan Doncaster winger Steven Hilhetta.

Sedgley went 47-10 ahead, and it was only in the 74th minute that Hilhetta ran in his second try.

Harrogate stretched a 7-5 interval lead into a 25-5 victory over Leicester Lions.

Robert Young drove strongly from behind an attacking scrum to put the Lions ahead before Callum Irvine cut through the defence for a try converted by Joe Rowntree.

A penalty by Rowntree extended the home lead before Luke Edwards went in at the corner. Harrogate pressure continued and Rowntree’s penalty made it 18-5 before Irvine danced through the midfield to score another converted try.
