Wimbledon Day Two: the highlights

Serena Williams was forced to dig deep as she opened the defence of her Wimbledon title with a three-set victory over the spirited Aravane Rezai on Centre Court.

Williams, playing only her second tournament since recovering from a serious foot injury and blood clots on her lungs, finished strongly against the world number 61 to win 6-3 3-6 6-1.

Third seed and si-time defending champion Roger Federer of Switzerland has beaten Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin 7-6 (7/2) 6-4 6-2 in the first round.

Britain’s Dan Cox suffered a first-round defeat at his maiden Wimbledon Championships today, falling to a straight-sets defeat to Sergiy Stakhovsky.

The 20-year-old from Lincoln was trailing by one set to love when the rain held up his match with the Ukrainian last night, and his fortunes were little better on Court 14 this afternoon as his opponent wrapped up a 6-2 6-4 6-2 win.

Andy Murray’s second-round Wimbledon opponent was confirmed this afternoon as Germany’s Tobias Kamke impressively saw off Blaz Kavcic in four sets.

Caroline Wozniacki coasted into the second round of Wimbledon with a 6-2 6-1 victory over Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain before a subdued Court One.

It took just 59 minutes for the world number one and top seed from Denmark to dismantle an opponent positioned 104 places lower in the world rankings.
