Win of 2010 repeated as Williams cruises home

SKIPTON cycling ace Pete Williams overcame challenging foggy conditions to win the 20-mile Circuit of Ingleborough time-trial in North Yorkshire.

Williams, the 25-year-old who rides for the Node 4-Giordana team, clocked 52min 10sec for the 20-mile course, which should’ve been a 27-mile event, but was shortened because of temporary traffic lights which appeared on the course at the last minute.

Williams, who won the event in 2010, was in blistering form and won by more than three minutes from Team Wallis rider Calum Nicholson, from Carnforth in Lancashire, while another Node 4 rider, 25-year-old James Sampson from Huddersfield, took third place.

The women’s event also saw a Yorkshire winner, with Ilkley CC’s Katherine Pimlott clocking 1.08.05.

Elsewhere, Huddersfield’s Alastair Wareham (Team Swift) won the Malton Wheelers 10-mile time trial at Sledmere, his time of 22.14 being enough for victory by 35 seconds from his team-mate from Lincolnshire, Jon Surtees.

Hull-based 56-year-old Dave Hudson came out on top in the veterans on standard category, which factors in a rider’s age to allow them to compete against younger riders. Hudson’s time of 24.30 gave him seventh overall, but he was an impressive 4.22 quicker than his age standard.

Scunthorpe Poly CC team-mates Julian Ramsbottom and Anthony Nash secured a one-two in the VTTA North Midlands 18-kilometre event at Ranby in North Nottinghamshire.

Ramsbottom clocked 22.16, while Nash was 51 seconds slower.

In bunched racing, Keighley’s Tom Moses (100 Per Cent ME) took third spot in Saturday’s big race, the Roy Thame Cup in Buckinghamshire.

He was part of a break which stayed clear for virtually all of the 69-mile race on roads around Botolph Claydon, which was won by Irishman Philip Lavery.
