Wingers on song as Malton go nap

Yorkshire One: After a close first half, leaders Malton and Norton pulled away to score a 41-8 victory in their penultimate league match at Ilkley.

Five tries gave Malton another five-point win, with winger Josh Saunders scoring two of them and Henry Newitt on the other wing also touching down.

Ilkley’s first-half try was by scrum-half Kirk Arundale, with Phil Howell adding a penalty after the restart.

Sheffield maintained second place despite being held to a 20-20 draw at Bridlington, where the home side scored three tries to their rivals’ two.

Second-row Tom White and a penalty try helped Sheffield to a 20-15 lead with 10 minutes left, while Donal Collins kicked both conversions, a penalty and a drop goal.

But Bridlington shared the spoils with second-row Paddy Waines, prop Mark Floyd and centre Regan Stirk touching down, and Steve Mellonby kicked a conversion and penalty.

Third-placed Heath collected a four-try bonus in their 27-8 home victory over Keighley.

Tries came from Martin Moana, Simon Brown, Jarrod Morris and Ian Spence, and Matthew Hallett kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Selby, third from bottom, look doomed to relegation following a 40-15 defeat at Castleford, while Dinnington, with two matches still to play, moved level with Selby on league points after a five-point 22-8 home win over Scarborough.

Castleford’s win took them to eighth. They took the lead after two minutes with a penalty from Ian Mattison, but Selby full-back Alex Lunt scored the first try. Mattison added a second penalty and converted when captain and No 8 Chris Willett touched down.

Chris Brown scored two second-half tries for Castleford, with others from centre Chris Redfearn and prop Steve Johnson, to make it 40-8 before Selby scored a try through Ollie Saunders, converted by Alex Webster.

Yorkshire Two: In a top-versus-bottom encounter, leaders Pocklington scored their biggest league win on record, 90-7, in their home match against Old Rishworthians.

Pocklington ran in 13 tries, scrum-half Ben Rees scoring a hat-trick and full-back Nick Bennett and fly-half Joe Holbrough adding two each. Bennett notched a personal tally of 35 points, scoring an opening penalty and converting 11 of the 13 tries with his two other kicks hitting the post.

The visitors gained a consolation try through flanker Gerard Rollings, converted by Michael Piper.

Huddersfield YMCA maintained second place with a 38-16 win at West Leeds.

YMCA were being held to a 17-11 margin at half-time but then pulled well clear with two tries in the space of two minutes early in the second half.

Centre Andrew Ryder scored two of the visitors’ six tries.

Winger Danny Thorpe and centre Phil Leal scored tries for West Leeds, with Danny Monk adding two penalties.

Barnsley, in third place, also ran in six tries to maintain the status quo with a 43-23 victory at Yarnbury.

Yarnbury took an early lead with the first of two tries from winger Chris Flowers, but Barnsley then went 14-3 in front with tries by second-row Jordan Wood and No 8 David Reed, both converted by Andrew Appleyard.

A try by centre Jason Avison and a penalty from Carl Paterson put Yarnbury back to within a point, and Appleyard and Paterson exchanged penalties either side of the break. Yarnbury had most of the pressure early in the second half until injuries took their toll and Barnsley pulled away with four further tries, Reed completing his hat-trick.

Doncaster Phoenix slipped two places to ninth when they were defeated 29-17 at lower placed West Park Leeds.

Yorkshire Three: Wath on Dearne, unbeaten in their first 21 games, are heading to the title despite suffering their second consecutive defeat, 17-5 at home to Baildon.

Baildon went ahead with early tries by outside centre Jason Ah Tong and scrum-half James Dawson before Wath pulled back their lone try by winger Brett Small five minutes before half-time.

The visitors made certain with a try from right-winger Hayden Lister, converted by his brother Nick Lister.

Bramley Phoenix, the previous week’s winners over Wath, had to work hard for their 47-41 victory at Thornensians, where both sides scored six tries.

Bramley led all the way, going in front with two early penalties and turning round 33-21 ahead.

The visitors then stretched out a 20-point lead before Thorne clawed back much of the deficit, with stand-off Zak Holgate running in a hat-trick of tries.
