Workforce back in form to take Arc

Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore fulfilled life-long ambitions as Epsom Derby hero Workforce bounced back to his brilliant best in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp.

The King's Best colt travelled strongly throughout in the hands of the champion jockey – but was still nearer last than first on the turn for home.

However, he showed an excellent turn of foot given the testing conditions to hit the front approaching the final furlong and dug deep in the closing stages to repel the sustained challenge of Nakayama Festa.

Workforce had been a spectacular winner at Epsom, where he broke the course record, but his Arc participation remained undecided until as late as Thursday following his dismal performance in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on his previous start.

Stoute, who had come closest in the Arc when second with Pilsudski in 1996 and 1997, said: "It's been a long time coming, but I'm delighted it has happened at last – especially with this horse, because he looked outstanding at Epsom on Derby day.

"He was a big disappointment in the King George. It's been a real team effort (to get him back) and I'm not just saying that as a cliche. The jockey gave him some ride.

"If you have any ambition when you start training, you want to win the Arc.

"We have had a lot of horses running particularly well in it without doing it, so I'm thrilled, especially as he was so impressive on Derby day and the King George performance was inexplicable.

"I don't know if I'm likely (to train him as a four-year-old) but I'd love to."

Triple champion jockey Moore is only 27, but it was mission complete for him too.

He said: "The Derby and the Arc were my biggest two ambitions in racing and this horse has supplied them both."

Credit Swap made it third time lucky as he landed the bumper prize in the totesport.com Cambridgeshire at Newmarket on Saturday.

Michael Wigham's charge was having a third run in seven days after finishing third at Ascot the previous Sunday and fourth at headquarters on Thursday.

However, the 14-1 chance showed no ill-effects from his busy schedule as he powered away with the first leg of the autumn double by three-quarters of a length from Steele Tango.

Wigham said: "It is unbelievable. We train him for this time of year and the consolation race for the Cambridgeshire was the race (run on Friday) we had in mind–- we did not think we would get into this and we thought the ground would be too deep for him as he does not get a mile-and-a- quarter.

"He was unlucky at Ascot on Sunday and again here on Thursday. But then the rain did not come and we thought we might as well take our chance in this because he was in great form and one or two of my horses have half-needed their races.

"The horse is all heart and it is great that something like this can happen to smaller owners."

Fury joined the growing ranks of two-year-olds to get excited about for next season as he stamped his authority on the 500,000 Tattersalls Millions 2YO Trophy, claiming a one-and-three-quarter-length success over Pisco Sour.

The William Haggas-trained Invincible Spirit colt is a general 33-1 chance for the 2000 Guineas.

Masaya (20-1) will be aimed at the Irish 1000 Guineas after digging deep to hold the late thrust of Tale Untold and claim the 300,000 Tattersalls Millions 2YO Fillies' Trophy for Clive Brittain and Tom Queally.

Richard Hughes will launch an appeal after the championship-chasing jockey was banned for seven days at Wolverhampton on Saturday night.

Hughes's attempts to claw back Paul Hanagan's lead at the summit of the jockeys' championship were dealt a serious blow when he was found guilty of careless riding aboard Aviso, who won the concluding handicap.

The jockey received a six-day suspension for that offence, before which he was banned one day for using his whip with excessive frequency on Tallawalla, runner-up in division two of the extended nine-furlong handicap. Hughes is due to be out of action between October 16-22. He trails Hanagan by nine winners.
